If there is one single show that every fashion-loving girl will covet – it has to be Sex and the City. I remember the first time I watched an episode (I think episode 3 or 4 of Season 1), I watched it with mouth agape because I couldn’t fathom how a serial can be so spot-on. Then I got my hands on the entire six seasons, and watched part of it repeatedly with my roommates.
I love how people like different characters, and are divided into the camps of Mr. Big vs. Aidan. But the best thing – apart from the plot and witty conversations and Saturday breakfasts – has to be the clothes!
Carrie Bradshaw is my modern equivalent of what Audrey Hepburn is to fashion. On my regular shop-hopping sessions with my girlfriends in town, we’d randomly pick up a top, and say “Oh, this is so Carrie!” I’d like to think that Carrie Bradshaw has evolved into something more than a character, an actress (SJP), and into an icon.
She feels almost like a friend, if I count the number of times we’ve held discussions about her love life. In fact, I think I have some friends I don’t talk about as much. Not because I don’t want to, but because there isn’t really much to discuss about their lives.
I love Carrie’s outfits, I really do. Every time I watch a new episode, and she steps out in a new outfit, I’ll squeal in delight. Even these days, when I feel nostalgic, I’ll just pop an episode into my computer and watch a random episode – and still feel great about the clothes that she wears.
So here I have my favourite looks, season by season:
Season 1

She looks like she just threw on whatever is on the bench in front of
her bed, and still manages to look fabulous.
Season 2

Swiss milkmaid outfit!

Floral printed dress, fabulous hair, and a bag I would never buy if I see it in the shops, but she can still carry it off so well!

Actually I just love how the top looks on her. It fits at all the right places.
Season 3

I’m really against fur – but I love the weird patterned boots and her checkered skirt.

One of my favourites! I don’t think I will ever see anyone wearing something like this in Singapore – the vibrant colours looks fab. I wish I had a suit like that (hers is from Givenchy) to wear to work – in a colour that isn’t gray – or black or white.

Enter: the huge corsage! First on the shoulders…

The Dior bag is gorgeous. We have here it here in a yellow scarf-print design, but the white leathered one is fabulous in real life.

I think I sort of gave a little sigh at this outfit. The fitted jacket and the toga top looks great together.

My idea of weekend gorgeousness: Throw on a vintage dress, carry a quirky bag and match a pair of shoes with the outfit. It doesn’t get simpler than this.
Click for more looks from Season 4-6. It’s a picture heavy entry!
Season 4

Okay one of my secret dreams is to wear a cape out in Singapore and not look silly.

Ah, I really like how structured the grey coat looks.

Satin + Leopard print + undies on public display = absolute coolness. ‘Nuff said.

Okay this is my #1 favourite picture, because I want to highlight how difficult it is to mix two bold prints/patterns.
To experiment, think of two floral printed pieces that you have and imagine them worn together. It will 99% look hideous, especially when the prints are relatively bigger, like the ones seen on Carrie above. But she still looks great! Don’t ask why, the only reason is because we’re not fashion experts – or at least not expert enough.

The stark white combination is fabulous! And I really love the brolly. Tried looking for one like this in Hong Kong, failed miserably.

Another favourite look – belt on naked torso with matching skirt! Now who would have thought of that?

Another favourite! I think I have a soft spot for dresses and matching shoes.

Another favourite. Reason being, if I pinned a lace hanky to my suit the way she did, and waltzed to work, I am sure the bosses will enquire if I am nursing a bad cold.
Season 5

Enter huge corsage: now on head!

White fitted jacket with floral dress.
Did you know for a good part of Season 5, Carrie was visibly pregnant? I didn’t, until someone told me. I think this is one of the shots where she manages to hide her belly so well.

She’s wearing Scholl slip ons. I was amazed when I saw this, actually. It still looks good.
Season 6

Here’s another coat she has that I absolutely covet.

Note the single bobby pin on her head.
I just have to say that I think it looks fab on her, but if I put it on my black hair I may risk looking like I just stepped out of the sixties.

Costume fetish continues, first swiss milkmaid, next candy striper!

You can wear this dress to the prom! Or to the theatre.

Here she is swimming in the gown. Can I just say how much I dislike the European she was seeing at this point in the serial?!

Note the ankle boots – its still in now. Also, note the cute gloves.

I end with the famous watermelon dress. Its actually Balenciaga, I think.
I hope you enjoyed reminiscing about SATC the way I enjoyed writing this.

I know you don’t have a picture of it but I’m trying to find a good picture of the “naked dress” she worn in the 1st season. My 18 year old daughter wants to wear something like it to Prom. I saw somewhere it’s a Calvin Klein but I’m not sure that is the “naked dress” do you know which dress is the “naked dress” she wore out with Mr. Big and on the side of the bus? Thanks for your help

I kinda dont get the clear picture of Aleksander Petrovsky in the series. When a person is so in love then i think during their first fight he apologieses. I felt it was a little too dramatic and unreal that he slapped Carrie during their first fight!
August 27, 2007 at 11:49 am
i dont think that Aleksander had slapped her in purpose, i think it was an accedent although i hate him.
i think u missed a fabulace thing that carry was wearing in the last episode of season 6 .. the blue coat ! it was absoloutely amazing.

All the old stuff I wore as a child is coming back. Kinda scary and makes you feel old, but it looks great most of the time.

In the final episode as the four girls leave the coffee shop together Carrie is wearing grey ankle boots that i love, anyone know where they’re from?
December 5, 2007 at 2:10 pm
Danielle- not sure if you are talking about the boots i am thinking of, but i am desperate to find out where they are form too!! She wears them on her “walk in the park” date with Aleksander Petrovsky as well, and they are just amazing.
Sadly, however, i have no idea where they are from either- does anybody else??

I loved reading/looking at all these fabulous pictures of Carrie. My friend and I are currently obsessed with all things SATC, and can I just say I L.O.V.E. that last outfit…I remember she wore it in Paris, and I couldn’t stop staring at how perfectly the coat fits over the dress….and those shoes are just AMAZING. Much love to a fellow SATC fan! I can’t wait for the movie next month too!

August 1, 2008 at 4:48 pm
anybody know the dress that carrie wears in season 6 ‘the post it always sticks twice’
she wears it to the club ‘Bed’. its kinda grey, backless and she puts a hood up at the end when she ‘gets caught smoking a doobie!’
i have been searching for ages, so if you think u might have any ideas i would be grateful for any help!
many thanks!
August 28, 2008 at 12:39 pm
The top Carrie wore to “bed” in the “post it always sticks twice” episode was designed by Vivienne Westwood. I love it too. It is probably one of my favorites of the entire show.
September 30, 2008 at 11:22 pm
btw, Aleksandr Petrovsky was not European. He was from Russia, which we all know, is not in Europe
October 17, 2008 at 10:29 am
the final dress is actually vivienne westwood
October 18, 2008 at 8:50 pm
The slip ons arent Scholl, they are designed by a finnish fashion designer Hanna Sarén and they are made of wood.

*sigh* thank you for this. I think my favourite Carrie outfits are in season six when she’s dating the Russian. I don’t like him, But I am dying for that Balenciaga watermelon dress outfit. And if I ever found something like the huge Vivienne Westwood evening dress, I think i would cry with joy x)

FYI, Russia is in both Europe and Asia. Most Russians live in Europe, since the most populated areas of the country are there. I don’t see anything wrong with saying most Russians are European.

Hi girls (and guys)!
Here’s another fan of the series, amazing huh?
Well, I need your help.
I am in loooove with a look I have seen on Carrie in one of the episodes.. I can’t remember which episode, but I think it is in one of the last seasons..
She is in a restaurant/café with the girls, and she is wearing a white shirt with a white top outside, and of course her carrie-necklace. The white shirt is very plain, but the fabric it’s made off, is special, and that why I like it.
Does anyone know which look i’m talking about or where I can get a similar shirt?

[...] bought this sweet striped dress from Sui in Bangsar, KL. It reminds me of Carrie’s Candy Striper dress. I love the cute button details at the sides, the loopy bow and the ‘apron’ pockets [...]
