Style Icon: Twiggy

On weekends, one of my favourite things to do is to plop down in front of the computer, and decide who I’m going to write about on Style Icons.

This week, its Twiggy, the “first super-skinny supermodel”. Unlike Nicole Richie, Twiggy actually looks fantastic being stick-thin. I really love her pixie bob!
Like all ’60s models, the eye-makeup is distinctive. I also really like the play on colours in her outfits. I can’t help but compare her to Edie Sedgwick, but Edie has this fragility which Twiggy doesn’t have.

  • i wish i was skinny like that but im so fat i way 150

  • 150 is a beautful size, not fat at all! some people can work the skinny look, but it doesn’t look natural on others.
Twiggy was only 5′6″ and very petite she is a twig, but i have seen some more beautful full figured girls than i see skinny, looks like i could break you in half with a hug girls. 150 is the just right size. i promise

  • I think twiggy is amazing. I had never heard of her until she was a judge on America’s Next Top Model. She looks absolutely fabulous in that 1st picture!

  • Twiggy is a great model and she still is she’s both beautiful inside and out. She is the perfect role model for young teens (like me) who are aspire to become a model someday….

  • Yep my girl friend’s right she’s wicked cool and hott!!

  • Yes, Twiggy does look pretty good but I am sure they did some touching-up in her photos and personaly i would not want to be stick skinny i like my curves. I agree with Kirsten.

  • I don’t think they had the programs to touch up photos like this in 1967.
I think Twiggy is just one of those incredibly beautiful people who comes along every now and then who doesn’t need any photoshopping or whatever, and can still inspire her targeted audience just with natural beauty and flair for life alone.
I agree that 150 is a nice weight, I’ve seen much bigger people who are happy with who they are, but I really disagree with the fact that the first comment on this post is “I wish I was this skinny.”
THINK ABOUT TWIGGY!! WOULD SHE WANT YOU TO HAVE THIS ATTITUDE?!
Stop feeling sorry for yourself and bringing it upon other people and be HAPPY =)
Do your eyes up and focus on your good points, not what the scales say.

  • Shannon Gee x

im doing a project on twiggy, she was just amazing. =O

  • i looooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvve Twiggy!!!!!! She’s such a style icon, and i’m going on a major diet just to look like her! total true love, maknchace

  • there actually were ways to manipulate photos as far back as the 1920s, so I personally doubt that her pictures haven’t been touched up. And then there’s also how much people change through the “proper” application of makeup, too – many models and actresses are unrecognizable without their makeup.
Also, Twiggy may have been a good person, but the influence she has had on our society is horrible. Even the above posts are testimony to it (whether they’re intended as serious comments or not, the fact that it would be possible to believe those comments is very sad – “a perfect role model for young teens”?!). The image she presents is unrealistic and on most people looks really bad. You can be 150 lbs and be absolutely stunning, and 100 lbs and look terrible. Don’t aspire to weigh so little!

  • I think Twiggy stole Edie’s look to be honest.

  • She looks cute, in this paper doll way
    And she isn’t ugly
But yes, of course she was far too skinny
You wouldn’t feel very womanly being that skinny
More like an eleven year old boy
I’m a girl, but I like girls also
And the type of girls I like are the girls with curves :)
And me myself I prefer to have meat on me ^^

  • People begin to judge thin people too harshly. Some of the people are dieting too much, and I agree that a normal body is perfect. But some people, like me, are just naturally thin. We have a really high metabolism and don’t get to have curves. Instead we get made fun of and taunted. I would love to put on 15 pounds, and I eat absolutely everything. But my body just won’t allow me to gain that weight. So you can’t judge all skinny people as unhealthy and boyish. Because we want to put on weight, but we just can’t. We want to look normal.

  • Kay, I don’t think it’s very nice to say that skinny people can’t feel womanly. Being a woman doesn’t look just one way. I am very skinny and flat-chested, through no fault of my own (I blame my mother!!). Twiggy looks good for her body type. America Ferrerra looks good for her body type.

  • Ela é linda.
    INSPIRAÇÃO!

  • twiggy is so thin. i wish i were her,but im waayy…too fat to even thk of being her.i really wander what she eats to be that thin. or mayb she doesnt even eat.wow.i LOVE her.

  • I remember seeing pictures of twiggy when I was a teenager, somewhere around 1989. I remember being horrified at how scrawny she was. I couldn’t understand how that was attractive. I thought it was more freakish than anything and figured thats where her fame came from.

Now I see those same images today and I am shocked to realize that I see the same body type (anorexic and emaciated) in magazines and on TV every day.

It just goes to show how powerful those media are that one can be convinced, slowly, over time that what was once shocking and horrific is ‘normal’ and perhaps even ‘beautiful’.

  • it’ true sometimes it’s just metabolisme but i’m sure twiggy did not ate much to stay that thin, but i am sure she eats cos now that she’s older she’s no longer that skinny . never go on crash diets you will regret when your hair has fallen off and menstrual cycle stop as for a teenager don’t try to diet, just eat healthily

  • es un icono de la moda, pero se veia muy anorexica

  • twiggy is my main favourtie model.
she is beautiful in anyway and always stad outs and has her own idea’s on how to look beautiful.
i wish more models were more like her these days.

  • me encanta twiggy es un icono en la moda de los 60 sempre quedara marcada en la pasarela de la moda ..

  • Twiggy is nice in stardoll.I never see Twiggy yet.Twiggy is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I (11yrs old)turning 12 tomarow and have aVARY high matablisum i weigh 72lbs and am 5ft. 8in. tall in 6th grade people make fun of me ALOT and icry ALOT. some times i have dreams that when thay make fun of me i say well itleast when i grow up my face will be on the cover of a magazine and yours will be pics of the uglyst person in the world, but in real life i just put up with it .its hard being skiny=( i look up to twiggy and tyra because iwant to be like them when i get older i am doing a history fair project on how twiggy changed the world if y’all could type web sites or somthing to help me out i would be apreshitive p.s. Twiggy rox p.s.s ime from texas.

  • i love twiggy. back then and now.she was georgeous, and i think that she just was naturally skinny, with high metabilism. she was a little too skinny for her height, but i dont think she had an eating disorder- the public would probably have heard of it. her eyes were stunning and i love her clothes, her makeup. i wish it was 1966 and i was her- but not because of her skinnyness. i just love the 60s and i think i was born too late. also ahe was named worlds first supermodel at 16! that is my dream.
people are always moaning about others who critisize larger people, but, no body really does any more- its the skinny people with high motabilsm like me and my friends who get critisized and none of us have eating disorders. sometimes i get hurt by the offhand comments about my wieght that the people who say them think dont matter. in weaker moments this makes me wish i weighed more- so dont wish you were skinnier. i realised that people can say what they like and we can think what we like(whether we wiegh 70lbs or 170lbs) and it wont change how we look; so you are perfect.

  • chevere tu foto twiggy sta bacanazo !!!!!!!!¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • I think that you are beautiful whatever your size, but what truely makes you beautiful is what is on the inside. I know it sounds cheesy, but i know i would rather be around a glowing person on the inside, then to be around someone who is mean and always down. How you carry yourself is also important, you have to BELIEVE that you are beautiful and that is what really shows.

  • eating unhealthy will bring you more and worse sickness when you get old, arthritis from lack of calcium and vitamins, diabetes from not producing insulin when you dont eat…so think about where you want to be when you get older…

  • i am 28 yrs old/ 5ft. 95 lbs.
i have always struggled w/ my weight
in an attempts to pleasantly “plump up”.
    then i met…(((twiggy))) and learned
to embrace my boney beauty ; )
    (smiles)
twiggy made me comfortable in my skin…
    FINALLY!

  • FAN OF THE TWIG TWIG TWIGGY

Just to let you all know, twiggy DID NOT have an eating disorder. She was naturally this thin, and yes, it was probably because of her metabolism. There are many people who are as thin or even thinner than how she was, but are completely natural. She also has gained weight now after menopause:)
AAAAAAAAAnyway, as you can probably guess, i’m a huge fan of twiggy and i think that she is fantastic and beautiful. She is a fanashion legend and icon, and brought something fresh and great to Britain (and various other parts of the world)!

Also, i honestly think that you should be comfortable in how you look, but really trust me when i say that i know it’s easier to say than do. Rigorous diets are not a way in or a way out (however you want to look at it). You may think you look great when you are superskinny, but when you lose that much weight so quickly itis awful for many of your internal organs. YOU ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL; THINK OR CURVY. ciao ciao x

  • Twiggy is gorgeous but I agree with Britteny, she stole Edie Sedgwick look, Edie was the 60’s it girl!

  • Twiggy, whenever I see her images, makes me feel sorry for her, that no one bothered to care about either feeding her or helping her with healthy weight gain.

  • I think the reason Twiggy was so successful and popular is because (unlike nowadays) in the ‘60 they hadn’t really seen anyone like Twiggy before. She was skinny and small with androgynous but pretty looks. BUT even though she was skinny Twiggy has always said she was naturally this skinny and ate a lot of junk food growing up. I also think that there is not a lot of discrimination against fatter people and there is a lot of judgmental comments on skinner people, it isn’t always someones fault if they are skinny, just like it isn’t always someones fault or choice to be normal or curvier.
