The Scarf - An Unlikely Essential

If you notice, no one in Singapore really wears a scarf. We Singaporeans are appalling - it seems that everyone is denying that we’re overly exposed to sunlight. We solidly refuse to wear shades. Put on a wide rimmed hat and you score weird looks immediately. Wear a scarf around your head and people may just think you’d step out of a warped time machine… except of course, if you put on a veiled headband or hat. Then you’ve really lost it.

But why the hell not! Scarves are wonderful accessories, especially if they came from the house of Hermes. Madonna famously wore one as a halter, Grace Kelly used one as a sling when she broke her arm. These are just the usual examples - but I can think of so much more!

You can simply throw one on and tie it around your head on a bad hair day, or tie it over your watch when you’re doing something tedious to protect it. Wrap it around your bag handles for a different look, or just around the waist. Its also the best cover-ups for a hickey.

Even local celebrity Fiona Xie’s been spotted on Channel 8 sporting a sheer pink Hermes scarf on a variety show - except we wouldn’t have a picture of that because, you know, we do not have paparazzi here in Singapore.

If you are keen on acquiring some, level 3 of the Chinatown market (right next to O.G.) has a couple of stalls which carry loads of scarves for really low prices.

  • great blog! I have gotten most of my scarves at thrift/vintage stores for $2 or less. Such a great way to accesorize!
