Singapore Fashion Week Day 1: Fresh! – The Graduate Showcase

Today’s the first day of the Singapore Fashion Week, and it is Fashion Nation’s pleasure to obtain press passes to cover it, thanks to the organisers E-3 Communications & Design and TaFF.

We were more than delighted to be present, because we’ve scoured the local fashion blogs previously and have not come across any coverage on SFW. I’m thrilled that our own Fashion Week is open to blog coverage, because it just pushes away the generalization that Singapore fashion is boring and generic, but is instead dynamic and acceptable of global trends.

I think this move of fashion reporting of actual local fashion events into blogs signify what we’ve been seeing in other fashion hotspots like Paris, London, and New York, where scores of bloggers such as Style Bubble, La Coquette, Café Mode and street style bloggers like the Sart and Face Hunter sit in for Fashion Week regularly.

Dottie and I attended the opening show, Fresh!, essentially a competition of the four major design schools in Singapore: Laselle College of the Arts, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Temasek Polytechnic and Raffles Design Institute. The coveted prize is a two week internship with Topshop and Topman.

I’m leaving more deets in for you to get a feel of what it was like:

Here’s a picture before the show started as Dot and I were getting our press passes. I thought the stage design was quite fabulous, and smack in the middle of Vivocity so the public can get to watch too.

Here we are, front row at the opening show, waiting for the show to begin. The crowd was supremely fashionable. Scarves were abundant – striped, ethnic, keffiyeh.

Shoes! Christian Louboutin lace-ups, monogrammed Gucci and Louis Vuitton flats, short booties were spied. Bags wise, other than the classic brands like Tod’s and Chanel, I hadn’t seen anything that was non-branded yet impressive.

The opening collection for womenswear – with poofy dresses and ribbon-tied shoes.

Forgive my amateur photography, but this was a sheer dress – semi-similar to sheer outfits seen in Prada and Chanel.

For me, this is the dress which will first come to thought amongst all the collections shown in Fresh! There is everything to love about the structured poofiness of the dress. Also loving the minimalist top and the shoulder details of the toga neckline.

There were many other inspiring outfits, but my camera promptly died after this picture, even after I had triple-checked that it was fully charged. I was soon engrossed in analysing at the outfits (and okay I will admit it – the very hot male models!) to grouse about the short battery life of my long-lived cam.

Trends-wise, stunning high notes were shiny silver treggings on men! Should we cringe or be intrigued? I’m torn in between!

While on the topic of footwear, we noted that the models seem to have more difficulty strutting in flats than in heels, especially if they are flat wingtips.

Ankle socks were sewed with straps and used as footwear – I mildly wondered how they would feel if worn out but decided that it would hurt too much.

Also noticed a most Victorian looking outfit of white knee-high socks paired with brown loafers (menswear), which Dottie turned and whispered “How Lestat!”, if you are well-versed in the literature of Anne Rice.

Gold and neutrals were the main choice for color. Collections which stood out, for me, were Beautiful Boys by Felicia Lee (luxe outfits), Duality by Tsai Ming Hung, and Decay by Victoria Willmann (amazing detailing).

As mentioned, this is the first time Fashion Nation is covering Singapore Fashion Week. Whether you are a local or international reader, Dottie and I would love it if you would leave comments or suggestions on what we wrote and what you want us to cover and we’ll see if it can be done!

Hope you’ll enjoy our SFW coverage as much as we love writing about it!
