The Chic Quotient of Buckets

Regular readers of Fashion Nation will know that I’m not that big on bags - Stephie is the bag lady on this blog :)

I carry whatever that catches my eye, serves my needs or matches my outfit. In fact, friends has been pointing out my sloppiness (i.e. carrying the same bag every day) in the bags department.

But I do like bags. Right now, I am lusting after the Drawstring Bucket Bag:

A more interesting take on the bucket shape:

According to Stephie The Bag Lady, LV designed this bag for carrying wine. Sounds good and yummy to me! :)

Its a real classic and I have such fond memories of my mum and aunts carrying such bags back in the ’80s and early ’90s (when I should really had been too young to notice handbags).

With my friends buying designer bags left, right and center, it may be a bit hard for them to fathom my aversion to forking out a few hundred dollars for one as well. Simply put, I do not feel that I’m at a point in my life where designers bags are a priority.

Plus, I do believe in there can be quality without crazy price tags. That’s why I’d been scouring eBay - I may score a 20 year old, authentic mum-era bucket bag! :)

Or, if it really comes down to that, I can always make it myself. I’m thoroughly inspired by the likes of The Sewing Divas, one of whom made this gorgeous drawstring bucket bag from scratch:

Ideally, I will like a bag in such a vivid, rich colour :)

So anyone who knows where I can get a bag like this (without the designer price tag), please report back!

  • hey! I read that the LV petit noe was originally designed to carry champagne bottles and can hold up to FIVE bottles!! four standing, and the remaining one upside down.

I’ve seen some vintage-y ones at far east plaza! I have no idea the name of the store but I’m pretty sure it’s got a sliding door, is slightly cramped and dim, and has lots of merch all over the place.

Other than that, I’m quite sure I saw one similar bag at Entrepot (China Square Central) but that was back a month ago!

I hope you go with the crafty idea of making it yourself though, and do share the results with us!

  • Thanks for the shout out. I made that blue drawstringbag and used Vogue pattern 7703. It is not difficult to sew.

  • Hi Andrea, I know the shop you mentioned in FEP. Have told Dottie about it over the weekend, I’m sure she’ll be mucking around that shop soon! Its near Mudan, the jewelry shop.

  • I stumbled across this girl on the street carrying exactly the kind of bag you were talking about, in camel colour..and i went up to ask her where she got it. She told me she got it from one of the vintage shops at the army market in Lavender. I’ve tried Far East and Bugis Village both but couldn’t find anything nice/similar. So maybe I might just try the army market! You should too, and let me know. Hehe.
