Me Likely Fashionable Men

On a recent trip to Agnes B, Mystery Man X (hoho) and I came across an Agnes B Homme black leather tote bag which is perfect - the size, the proportions, the details.

Mystery Man X has been looking for something like this for quite some time now. He’d decided, after encountering many doubtlessly stylish men on the streets, to abandon the Singaporean boy staple messenger bag/backpack.

Yet, Singaporean men in general are still sheepish about making an effort to be fashionable. This is captured perfectly by what Mystery Man X said after refusing a fearlessly metrosexual carry-all - I still want to have my friends you know.

That’s why I love it when I see men who are not afraid to dress up without having to feel apologetic about seemingly compromising their manliness.

The eternal excuse that men in Singapore give for not making an effort is the heat and humidity. I know - even girls complain of it endlessly.

But that really is not a reasonable reason - like all problems, there’s always ways around it. And the increasingly number of stylish men I’d seen on the streets is evidence of that :)

In many ways, it is a lot easier to look put together in a turtleneck or a smartly cut jacket. However, it doesn’t really work that well on the Little Red Dot - sweaty men does not attractive men make.

I feel that for men, the quality, cut and proportions of their clothes are paramount. There is no need to add on a jacket if you are already wearing an impeccably tailored shirt. Trust me, there’s a difference between a really good fitting shirt (possibly custom-made) to the one you grabbed from a departmental store sale.

One mens wear trend that I really like has often been highlighted by the Sartorialist. The shirt with tailored berms look:

One tip for looking dressed up instead of sloppy in berms is to choose one with a flattering cut (usually narrower or just straight rather than baggy) and to pair it with loafers or even dress shoes - sandals may do as well, but never slippers.

Colours are also good and simple ways of adding that something extra to an outfit. They should not be the domain of only women - men can wear colours too :) Although many men prefer to inject them in via their accessories, colouring up key pieces makes you stand out.

I’m looking forward to seeing more men become unapologetically chic :) In the meantime, Mystery Man X and I are still looking for the perfect, affordable tote bag, so spill the beans if you have any inkling of where we can find it

  • Try m)phosis. They have a nice tote there that is a decent size for men or women.
I do agree with your point of shorts. And the point is they dont have to cost much. I bought 2 pair of pants from a G2000 sale and turned them into shorts. They look like a bang.

  • i can almost never accept why would anyone, ever, pair flip flops/slippers with everything except beach wear or go-downstairs-to-the-coffee-shop clothes. a lot of singaporeans seem to love to do that and it makes me cringe very badly. oh and yes, shorts that fits well looks superb on both sexes. cargo berms are out already, no?

besides i think the humidity shouldn’t be a reason to not dress up anymore because it is rather easy to find fall wear that is adapted to our weather :D hooray.

  • Glam Boy is always asking me to put his keys, wallet, etc. etc. in my bag, even if all I’m carrying is a tiny clutch or evening bag. I’ve been telling him to get a “man purse” for a few years now, but he hasn’t found one he can live with either. If you guys find a great one, I’m first in line.

  • D.H.: Turning pants bought from a sale into shorts sounds like a fantastic idea!

Walnutsrice: I LOVE Fall clothes. But generally, a lot of people do not know that nowadays, a lot of ‘traditional’ Fall pieces can be worn comfortably in our tropical climate. Cotton-mix knits are usually a good bet :) They’re not warm at all in fact! Perfect for people with crazy central air-conditioning. Leggings are also a good Fall piece - again, getting them in cotton mix is a wise choice. I recommend eye-popping colours :)

Glam Guide: I totally understand :) And a man purse (though I personally call it a ‘man bag’ ;) is the solution. They’re hell to hunt down though, so all you really need to do the footwork :P

  • i have too many leggings. not good for the pocket but awesome for funky every day wearing. they are seriously addictive i must say =D

i love fall clothes!! :P zara has great coats this season . esp the red ones. so.beautiful.

  • that 2nd one is just a homely dame. i mean … i aint sure … but i hope it aint a dude.

  • you should try gap. they’re having a sale!

  • The bar for men’s fashion is still really really low, and folks will ask you if there is a special occasion if you look dressed up. Couple of weeks back, I went for lunch in an Italian restaurant, wearing a black cardigan over button down shirt.
I had 2 {ahem, thoughtful} waitresses come up and ask me if I was not feeling well, and offered to switch my cold water to warm water. Sigh…

  • Oh that sounds so wrong, Heckler! I would sigh too if I were you.

  • You shld go check out Calvin Klein. I am eyeing one black leather tote myself…and they are having 30% off for all bags! Yippee!
