Rest Well, Shu Uemura

A sad piece of news came in over the radio as I was making my way to Haji Lane for dinner with Dottie. Amidst a mild traffic jam, I heard on the six o’clock news that Mr. Shu Uemura passed away of pneumonia on December 29.

I mulled and wondered - only knowing he was a sort of bald, severe-looking man who was really great with lashes, what else did I know about him? Not much. I know that he made his break when a Hollywood movie’s makeup artist was unavailable and Mr. Uemura stepped in for him, transforming Shirley MacLaine, the actress starring as a geisha, from a Caucasian woman to a woman with completely Asian features:

However, how did he impact my life? Huge. Loads.

Other than just being the creative brains behind the endless number of fashion looks each season, he touched my life directly.

Without him, I would never have my pink, oil-based makeup remover which I lovingly slather over my face after a horrid work day (like today) and feel really pampered and happy that my skin is clean and getting the best it can receive.

Without him, my friends and I will never have that amazing eyelash curler which, though looks like any other eyelash curler at the neighbourhood pharmacy, can capture my full width of eye-lashes (that says a lot) and keep them curling from day to night without harming much of my lashes. It is not just my Holy Grail of eyelash curlers, but millions of other ladies out there count it as theirs too.
Having never ventured further, my Shu Uemura product descriptions stop there. However, it is the false eyelashes like these which really made my jaw drop:

I really wouldn’t go on dates with these, but they belong to the beauty category which regular Singaporean men would consider too “over” while we girls know better and understand that these are certainly awe-inspiring.

So here’s to you, Mr. Shu Uemura, and the great impact you have brought to our daily lives.
