F/W08: Marc Jacobs

I’m depressed.

I can’t do my “oooh! Marc did it again!” routine this season for Marc Jacobs Fall Winter 2008 – and you know how I love him!

I had a long Friday and Saturday out for Chinese New Year visits to get myself some moolah for the gambling to follow later, and in the meantime totally neglected checking out this collection until Sunday morning.

And when I did, I just about choked on my breakfast.

I’m trying to pick out the outfits that didn’t do it for me (the five pictured above), but I’m giving up midway because I think its going to reach double digits. I think it is the general shapelessness of it all. It seems many think its better than his Spring collection, but I certainly beg to differ.

Marc, what’s going on?

Why is the model wearing a rolled up towel on her forehead?

And the jewelry… I can get this off the 50% off racks of Topshop… which I will look at, pooh pooh and not buy!

One redeeming factor, though – I like these hats. They make me think of powder puffs for my loose powder, or to a lesser extent pirates, which looks really fun to put on one’s head.

On one hand, yes, its 100% different from what all other designers are doing right now. But aesthetically, I just cannot reconcile that these outfits look good. I do not get that crazy happiness clicking through the outfits like I usually do.

I’ll leave you with the full video of the collection, which did sort of ease my headache somewhat to see the models move in the clothes. It always help to make me feel better about the collection.

What do you think of this collection? If you like it, please share the reasons, because I have yet found a solid reason to like this yet!

  • it’s really depressing – the most fitting answer to this collection gave marc himself, he said “i wasn’t very inspired this season.”

my oh my, and i put so much hope into marc after ny was so boring… instead i put my head to stockholm and copenhagen – much more fun and enjoyment :)

  • Hi Mary :)

Yes, I’m getting much more enjoyment out of Copenhagen this week. Is there Stockholm too? I have to check it out!

  • Disaster, that’s what I think about it. I always feel sorry for the models who have to walk in clothes cinched so tight at the bottom that they cannot move. It defies logic why a designer would send that down the runway. Maybe I just don’t “get it”.

  • waif-centric collection. I like the draping effects of the clothes, but don’t see alot of people carrying them well.

  • Hi Fashion Sensei! I know – I’m really going ‘huh?’ at the collection as well! I don’t get it too!

redheels – the textures of the collection is sort of different, kind of fuzzy and warm! But that should be left for bathrobes, not jackets! (:

  • Blah…he must have been feeling REALLY uninspired if this was the result (unlike a lot of the fash critics, I’m inclined to take Marc’s statement at face value). The man should have just opted out of showing and worked on next Spring’s collections…doubt LVMH would let him do that, though.

  • Agreed on the opting out, but as a designer you should try to put your best out there… and saying that being uninspired isn’t going to get you anywhere in the harshness of the fashion sphere…

I still love marc, though. I’m crossing my fingers, I hope LV is better…
