Graffiti as Art

This week, we’re having really chilly weather in Singapore. I was just discussing with some friends that we actually could drive without our air-conditioners on, which is such a rare occurrence here, given that this is the Land of the Eternal Summer.

I met up with Dottie on Tuesday for a lot of shopping and dinner, then onwards to watch a local movie. In Singapore, weekday movies are really cheap. With a credit card discount we can pop in for a movie for SGD6, which works out to be USD4.30 or 2 pounds.

In between activities, we found a graffiti wall which was more or less perfect for our backdrop - you can hardly find graffiti in clean and green Singapore, where there are fines attached to almost anything from spitting to smoking in clubs.

I worked this outfit around my faux-leather skirt. It’s suitable for work, a versatile piece, and in a material that is different from most office wear. I love it because it reminded me of my old sofa. For less than SGD20, it was a steal.

The shoes was also lust at first sight - at almost SGD90 it wasn’t cheap, but it was way too cute for me to pass. The diagonal buckle straps my foot in like a safety belt, and the skirting around the ankle was just so unexpected.

While the color of the khaki jacket sort of throws the outfit somewhat out of balance, to me it’s just a great outfit that’s comfortable and allows me to work fast in the office.

  • Jacket - Zara (grabbed from the sale at SGD89)
  • Tank-top: G2000
  • Skirt - GG<5 (happily snatched from the sale at less than SGD20)
  • Shoes - Substance

Dottie’s feeling pretty in pink, and having to pop about town during the day for work, I’d say her outfit was quite fuss-free. I’m very much a sucker for pink outfits so I really like what she’s wearing here.

Her entire outfit is from Haji Lane. The shoes were purchased at Bianca, which has great dressy heels for outfits like this.

  • Tank-top: From the Mothership’s Closet
  • Pearls: thrifted from a bazaar
  • Skirt: Soon Lee
  • Shoes: Bianca

Bit wordy post but I just thought I should try and narrate the thought process behind our outfits. Popping out for some groceries now!

Loving how chilly it is

  • love your shoes stephie!!!
    =DDD

  • Don’t you think that a graffitied wall would look nice in a flat against plain coloured walls? I love the idea of having one at my place one day… ;) Lovely shoes, Stephie! That’s the colour that I’m hunting for right now.

  • I love your skirts and shoes…it’s all I can do not to phone my friend in Singapore and beg her to shop me some of that..

  • And the graffiti is fab. The graffiti in India is all horrible paintings of party symbols around election time, so things like this give me a bit of hope for the state of the world’s walls.

  • Hi ettenyl! Thanks, it was pretty much love at first sight for me too!

Hi Hanna! Well yes, actually, I think art incorporated into a Singaporean apartment will be very fabulous. Have you been to Soon Lee at Haji Lane? I adore their wall illustrations, do take a look if you’re in the area.

Hi Drusilla! Yes I kind of get the idea about political graffiti, I’ve seen many while travelling about in Europe. However, it’s stricter in Singapore, so you’ll find none of that here. Even this wall is an “allowed” wall at the Youth Park, technically graffiti artists will be heavily fined in Singapore if graffiti is found elsewhere.

  • love your blog, we should swap links.

  • OMFG! I am like a plus size gal just like you! And how I wish I have the guts to wear that out. You are my inspiration. It’s so hard to find the right clothes for plus size gals. So where do you normally shop? Maybe we can go shopping together one day. :)

  • [...] satin+mesh bell-shaped skirt is my favourite of the lot. I have something similar (as seen here), and am thinking of various ways to wear it because I have a feeling I’m not fully utilizing [...]
