This weekend, Dottie and I dedicated an afternoon to ‘Doing the Karen Cheng – Singapore’. If you’ve been reading Fashion Nation and seeing lots of write ups on this event, but have no idea what it’s about, let’s have a short recap.
Karen had initially started a Facebook group called Doing the Karen Cheng, where she invited her readers to take outfit photos of themselves in mirrors, the way she often does for her blog posts.
Soon after, she found out she was coming to Singapore for a short trip, and decided to dedicate her birthday to raising money for charity. She tied up with the Red Cross and invited everyone to donate $10 while dressing up and taking photos. In two weeks, she was offered help from her readers in various ways, such as event organization and sponsorship.

Other than doing our bit for charity, it was a laidback afternoon chatting up various fashion personalities. The turnout is great, and we were sitting around and speaking to familiar faces like Sharon from Soon Lee, and newly made acquaintances like Michelle from Style Damsel.

I’m very impressed with how the event was so well-organised in a matter of days – and also very happy to have met bloggers whose blogs I’ve enjoyed for a long time. Through their blogs you get insight into their personalities, and when you meet them in person you feel familiar around them even though you’ve only just met!
I saw first hand how readers who’ve never met Karen turn up at the event, which is amazing to me as well. It just shows the power of blogging, where you write about your thoughts and it gets read by people. Unrestricted by geography and language (now that we have Google Translate!), we can communicate our thoughts and be free to share our opinions. When used positively, look at what you get – kindness in helping others, new friends to be made, and an overall enjoyable time!
This makes me hopeful for more fashion blogger meet ups, especially those who I’ve been reading for some time now and have no chance to meet. I know opportunities will come up when you least expect it, so I’m waiting patiently!
We’d also met several people who said they really enjoyed reading Fashion Nation, which always makes our day! Hello Nadya and Rachel, whom we had a great time chatting with.
A contented Stephie

Hi Stephie…it was utterly fabulous to bump into you and Dottie in real life, especially when I’ve been reading your blog since…*thinks* Well, I had short hair when I started, and now its past shoulder length…so let the length of my hair be the judge of Time.
I’m sorry that I didn’t get to chat with you girls longer (and I kind of ambushed you when you were leaving), but I did want to express my thanks for having such a wonderful blog that keeps me updated on the fashion happenings in sg when I am homesick in Melbourne.
Kudos!
