Leggings on Men

I have been perusing the menswear S/S09 shows out of curiosity and spotted the trend of shorts over leggings.

I find that absolutely unbelievable, because the total male population I know will rather eat their own shorts than to put on leggings.

I mean… can you just imagine your brother / classmate / boyfriend coming to you asking the ridiculous question of ‘hey how do you keep your stockings from running? I have that problem all the time!’? That’s really the last question I expect to entertain from a specimen of the male species.

I’m just curious – if you are a man – will you wear this?

  • If it was really cold … yes.

  • Hi Loong – well the silhouette will look great, honestly, but it is a stretch in terms of fashion boundaries for some! I’m waiting for those who are horrified by this trend to comment (:

  • that is CRAZY!!! I don’t know a man who would actually wear that as a fashion statement! Maybe for function, if your ride a bike or work out at the gym or do ballet…

  • Or perhaps, women are too narrow-minded about menswear, and men are actually interested in this trend… I’m curious to see how this discussion turns out!

  • Oh yeah, Givenchy mens SS09 has about the same look! — shorts with leggings. It’s definitely a trend , I have even seen guys in tights and micro mini shorts right here in S’pore.

But if the designers don’t feminize menswear they are going to bored the hell out of the shows! It won’t be long before you see a male model in a gown soon and I’m sure JPG will be the first to do so ;)
    *gasp*
    What’s wrong with this world.

  • actually, they have been spotted in Japan for quite some time i guess. saw this http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j136/pinkfatfat/leggings.jpg some time in april this year! was amazed but kinda secretly like it :D

  • agreed – first they put menswear on women and now the other way around? I can accept head gear i.e. headbands and what nots, but leggings on men is slightly pushing it…

but why not if they look good in it, yeah?

  • Hey Adeline! (: Thanks for that – that photo seriously looks better than the runway ones I posted!

  • Yeah, it’s been some time since this trend came out eh?

It’s really really subjective I think. Like what Laila said above, if there’s no feminized elements in menswear, I would have deleted mens-style.com off my favourites a long time ago.

For me, I can digest it well. The only time that I felt this androgyny trend went overboard was when Miuccia Prada send hunks in skimpy skirts/tutus for Fall 08. HAHA!

  • hello!! slight typo in your first para i think X) you wrote “leggings over shorts” instead of “shorts over leggings” lol.

personally, i think leggings & men just don’t go… i mean, hunky men have muscular legs & calves right? and muscular legs & calves don’t look good in leggings at all :S however, i guess some guys could carry it off, especially if they have those stick thin legs that every girl dreams of X)

  • hello ting – thanks for pointing that out!

  • i thought it might be good to mention that this “look” has already been done by designers prior to s/s09… way earlier, in fact – julius s/s07, ann demeulemeester f/w07, damir doma s/s08, and several more for f/w08.

can’t really comment since i’m not much of a shorts person to begin with, but if i did wear shorts it’s a look i’d definitely consider – with leggings that aren’t skintight, that is (refer to julius’ s/s07 collection here).

  • Hi polke – appreciate the input! I think leggings with more of a cotton/loose sock material would work as you’ve pointed out from the link – it tends to look much better than the clingy ones I’ve posted from Kiminori Morishi.

  • yes, yes annd yes i will wear leggings, have been planning so for some time anyway.

  • It’s been a valid (and workable) girls’ trend for years now, and if they’re slightly slouchy it could very well work. Let’s just see if it actually does take off..

  • I saw a guy wearing the full length stocking at BV a few weeks ago. At first I didnt notice it as i thought it was a long black pants. Quite shocked by this trend. I can only admire the guy for his bravery to wear like tt though.

  • Guys with shorts over leggings NO! That`s just cowardice. If a guy`s got the balls to wear tights, show them with pride.
If it`s OK for your average superhero, it`s Ok for me.
I love wearing lycra tights for cycling and blading. They feel great and look great.
    Get over it girls!

  • I have worn tights, pantyhose, leggings to the gym and mall. No bad comments. I wear with shorts and smeakers. I go to the gym or bike ride. This is the in thing. AOK!

One day at the gym I had a beautiful girl ask about what I was wearing. She asked if I was wearing stockings. I told her yes. I was wearing nude tights. She thought ok. She asked why. I told her it was to keep my legs warm to prevent cramps. I suggested her to buy leggings or tights. She came in the next time wearing leggings. She watched me exercise in front of her and next to her wearing tights. She didnt mind.

  • Leggings for men is not a new trend – one that’s been around for years. It’s time to get over the body image constraints and go for the comfort. Just wear them. Leggings are perfect casual wear for women AND men. Having worn leggings for years, I’m aware of people’s comments both negative and very positive. After all, it’s not the leggings on the man but the man in the leggings. Everyone looks good in leggings and some people look great!
If more people, women and men, wear leggings then it will just be another apparel choice. At one time denim jeans were worn only by miners digging for gold. Now they are everywhere.
So never say never – when you do decide to wear leggings, choose a well made pair – not with cotton fibers that bag out over time but a high tech fiber that retains its shape. Go for the comfort and support. Leggings that go to the ankle look better than capri style that chop the leg. Plus the full length leggings support you from your ankle to your waist and give you an energetic lift. Lose the shorts and just wear the leggings – it’s far more enjoyable that way.

  • skater Jason Dill is seen wearing it alot in yank land. But that was like…2 years ago.

I personally would consider it, but i aint sure if it would suit me.
But id wear it with a singlet and only in summer

  • Shorts over leggings? Ewww! Now, being as guy who loves to wear tights and leggings, I think that they are a great thing for men to wear *if* the guy has the right build for it, but the same goes for women. Leggings and shorts should never be worn together. Leggings and a skirt or longer top, absolutely. If more men wore them, they would realize just how comfortable and practical they really are.

  • I wear shorts over thermal/athletic compression leggings when going for a cool weather hike, as many other guys do. They make your legs feel like a million bucks and really do reduce fatigue. UnJeans work quite well for this.

  • As a guy who wear leggings and unitards all the time (as part of a regular outfit, not workout wear), I can say:

1). They are extremely comfortable. Why you’d ever find jeans comfortable after leggings is just beyond me.

2). You have to be bold. Goes without saying. You have to look comfortable and natural, not like you’re sneaking around. This really goes for ANY outfit, but particularly one on the fringe. You deffinately can’t be too shy about your body (and almost all men are). Short over it? That’s just a clue that you aren’t comfortable enough with yourself to be wearing such things.

3). Some people just won’t like it – for WHATEVER reason. You can’t change that and that’s their problem not yours.

4). Some people WILL like it. I get positive comments all the time, especially with my unitard based outfits.

5). You have to use common sense. You don’t want to wear leggings to Home Depot, and you have to plan ahead for the bathroom in a unitard!

So I say, if you want to wear something give it a try. You don’t have to have a model’s body for everything, and for everyone that will dislike your outfit enough to let you know, many more will tell you the opposite (believe me – after years of wearing a unitard and sportcoat almost everywhere, I’ve seen and heard it all. It’s no big deal.)

  • the poster who said men shouldn’t wear leggings if they have muscular, masculine legs simply has it all wrong and is
    Out Of Her Mind.
in the 80s in berkeley we wore long baggy shorts over capri-length tights & longjohns.
i myself have continued to sporadically feature the leggings, minus the shorts ever since.

archetypes to reference: jean-paul gautier; thierry mugler; larry blackmon from cameo; the early 90s nyc vogueing/patricia field/susanne bartsch crowd; spiderman; axl rose; howard keel in “kiss me kate”; michael york in romeo & juliet & logan’s run, star trek, buck rogers, fame, tom of finland and 70s porn icon peter berlin (if you like it extra-pervy).
mens’ legs, balls and asses were built for long, clinging leggings and anyone who says otherwise is an anti-beauty, sex-phobic, in-denial hater.
    i’m only saying!

  • I am male, 41 y.o., and have been wearing leggings for years. My partner (now wife) loves it as much as I did and do. I prefer the thicker kinds of leggings that were easier to get in the 90s.

  • Yes, I would wear them if other men also do. They are very comfortable and allow a feeling of freedom that pants do not. I do not feel that there is anything inherently feminine about them; it just happens to be that they have caught on with women and are now thought to be unmanly. I think that many men feel the same way I do about them, as they are fairly popular with male athletes.

Anyways, I think that many men are overly self conscious about their “manhood” and that they need to get past the fear of doing things commonly associated with women. It is an insult to women to say that men should only do manly things and then say that it is also acceptable for women to do things that are stereotypically masculine. This is a double standard.

  • Been wearing them for years st hope and athletic events. Don’t understand why not accepted in the mainstream. Macho insecurity is my guess.

  • Personally i think leggings on guys wouldnt be any different than on a girl. The only real honest differences are that men obv are gonna have a bulge, It hasnt been common so people are gonna have mixed opinions on this. I know many girls that say girls shouldnt wear leggings. and who ever said guys with the right biuld maybe. i agree. just like girls with the right build. Basically anyone whos not 400 lbs should be ok. but then again that is only MY opionion. I am Male, i am 21 and i have wanted to wear leggings for some time now. i am just to self consious cause i unfort give a crap how people view me. Once i get over that im gonna wear them as an outfit. And something else too, just cause i guy cares what he looks like and may like to show off his body doesnt make him gay. thats just something that i hear alot and it bothers me. But as a younger guy im gonna say yes, i would and i know alot of guys would too. and as you said they ARE super comfortable and it would be nice esp in the summer time to throw a pair on and just llounge or go to the mall or something. I personally dont think clothing should be restricted between the sexes…sides like lets say a dress because i would like to go with whatever is comfortable. And as with everything else everyone is gonna hate it or love it. I think that more guys should take a chance once in a while, myself included and just throw on a pair and see how it feels in public.

  • I think i as a male would be more likely to wear leggings if other men did, but i do think that i would rock the long underwear leggings sold at American Apparel ecspecially for men

  • I am very muscular and i wear leggings with long sleeve shirt open front and my girl was astonished by the lookings good i had!
Of course a slim or skinny guy’s will give bad impression and girl or men will get full of prejudice again him!

    who will treat me badly,lol!
peoples are coward and if i was skinny they treat me gay probably …..
But my shape stoped their argument !

  • This is a follow up to my post several months back – it is nice to see the posts from people who know that it’s great to wear leggings – for both women AND men. As someone who offers leggings to people around the globe it’s wonderful to get the feedback on their experiences of wearing them. Here’s one of the quotes posted on the website by a member of the “UnJeans Neighborhood” –

“My husband and I received our UnJeans, medium for me, large for him. We followed the instructions to wear them without any underwear and to pull them on – all the way up. We pulled on the UnJeans til they fit us perfectly.
We both said at the same time – ‘YESSSS!!’ The feeling was absolutely great. We went out wearing our UnJeans and they felt terrific all day long.
Plus my husband looks so hot in his UnJeans. Women’s legs have been appreciated for years, I’m so happy we now have the equal opportunity to appreciate men’s legs.
Thank you UnJeans! We’re definitely ordering more of them.”

It’s time to leave the body image constraints, body prohibitions and body taboos behind you.
Experience the freedom and liberty to be you, wear leggings and enjoy!

  • this style went out in the 80’s for women for a reason. its horrid. damn that lohan woman for reviving a nasty fashion trend.. and now its spread to men. :: gag::

  • Seriously…. no…. Sorry maybe im out of touch with fashion more than I assumed but biiig no. It’s just weird. Maybe if its a part of an outfit but no. Just no.

  • Leggings are a type of legwear. Women have legs and so do men. Men wore tights since the 14th/15th century, then women started wearing stockings/pantyhose in the 1950s. Some women’s fashion takes their design from men, like pants.

Leggings on men are perfectly ok, though I have not tried leggings under my shorts. However, i have worn pantyhose with leg support (matching my skin colour) with bermudas. Support pantyhose ar great for legs if you sit or stand for long hours.

I would like to see more men wearing leggings or even support pantyhose.

Like I said … women have legs and so do men. So why can’t men also wear leggings and/or pantyhose?

  • It depends on the purpose. For sports, arts or keeping warm, this is fine. You can find most sport apparel companies make men’s sport leggings, like Nike, Adidas, New Balance, etc. It has it’s reason – making movement easier. I jog few miles some time. How can I make it with a bulky pant in the windy West Texas?

  • Actually as a male, I probably would wear that look. I actually think it looks really cool and Im excited to wear the look come warmer weather

  • Ime a man yes yes I will wear leggings and I will go out wearing then aill the time hop more men do they fill rill nice to wear

  • i am a guy and of course i’ll wear leggings. i love them. i wear them as pants (but you’re shirt needs to be loooooong otherwise its a big NO for guy or girl) wear them with some huge clunky high tops and the result is sex

  • I have to say… I would wear leggings. If I weren’t in high school I would totally wear them. I am straight and I don’t have anything against leggings on men. (straight or gay)

  • I would wear them if others did as well.

I actuallly think its a great idea and feel that something like leggings or spandex pants should absolutely be accepted as Unisex. they are comfortable, lightweight and look great as long as your body is in ok shape.

I wear spandex for cycling and to the gym and often run an errand or two in my Cycling/Gym attire with no ill remarks or funny looks from people. I say we as men should just do it and people will learn to accept it.

  • I say why not? It won’t suit everybody but if you have the body go for it. I wear leggings when I run and the comfort is great. I recently wore denim look leggings out and the response was good. If done right it looks good. I wore a long oversized t-shirt with a jacket over top. Nobody really took much notice. It looked like skinny jeans. One person did say “he must be gay”. Well I know I am not gay. Thats a very narrow minded opinion. A person choice of clothing and there sexual preference doesn’t really relate. For the look and comfort. Yes

  • You’re stupid and sexist. I love them.
