The ’90s Revival… Already?!

It is undeniable that fashion blogs take their cues from the runways. But to our credit, I do not think that we’re mere copycats! :D Rarely (if ever) do I see bloggers replicating entire outfits off the runways – there’s always a personal touch, a twist, a re-interpretation and trends are often mixed and matched to become greater than the sum of their parts.

And sometimes, what’s going on in the blogosphere may be completely different to what’s happening on the runways :)

With the Fall 08 collections full of references to the ’80s, there is instead the slightest hint of the ’90s popping up in a few fashion blogs!

More specifically, the H&M cropped t-shirt has been spotted on some of my favourite bloggers.

Rumi from Fashion Toast.

Selina from Flying Saucer.

Gala from Inside Am-Lul’s Closet.

I can’t believe we’re baring our midriffs again! The last time I saw anyone do that was on Sex and the City (the series) where Carrie went through a phase of showing off her ridiculously toned abs.

And that is precisely what you need to rock this look – a flat (almost concave) stomach and a tiny waist. Which is why there’s no way I’m trying this any time soon! Beer and sheer laziness has made me a member of the skinny-fat society :(

But the girls above looks fab!

  • ah yes, carrie bradshaw and her tummy t’s. i had a lovely collection back when i was active, but now, i’d rather watch from a distance while i enjoy my ice cream :)

  • DAMN! How skinny those girls are! But yea, only girls with figure like that would most probably pull off those cropped t-shirts.

Anyway, about the 90’s fashion, I have been in this baseball jacket recently (on my lazy/casual days) and everytime I look at myself, I would go, “How Nineties?!”.

  • I am seeing the 90’s EVERYWHERE….its funny cause usually fashion repeats every 20 years, but I guess we’re getting tired of the 80’s! The 90’s all started with Chloe Sevigny….

  • They wear this really well, but I really hope it doesn’t hit the masses because then it will be done completely wrong!

  • oh dear i’m rather weary of that cropped top…

  • Now THERE’S a trend I was hoping would never return. So hard to pull off properly.

Say, any chance I could hop on your blogroll? I’m an avid reader and fairly frequent commenter, and you’ve been in my blogroll for ages, for what it’s worth …

  • wow…I just realised you guys just summarize thoughts from different bloggers and call them off as your own…

its a shame…for a while i thought you guys were genuine

  • That’s one risky trend to revisit.. At least I wouldn’t go there consciously. It was a go with the flow the first time, but now? No-no-no!

R – just curious… who were you talking about?

(I got this article in my weekly blog roundup!)

  • Hi Guys! :)

Yes, frankly I won’t want to see this look en mass on the the streets as well. It is just so hard to nail it. I am definitely keep away myself :D

But I’m a ’90s kid, so this decade is particularly nostalgic for me, even if it is not the most interesting in terms of fashion.

Zhiqiang: I think I’ll be trying some ’90s stuff myself soon… stay tune (and hopefully it won’t be a disaster)!

Sal: Sorry we haven’t updated our blogroll in a while. Usually we do it once every few months. Will be sure to add you when we do our housekeeping really soon!

Kpriss: Thanks for adding this to your weekly blog roundup! :D

  • Oh the jury is out – is this a return to Ms Spears territory? did Carrie actually look that good or did we just accept the look with the abs, whilst stabbing ours with forks to let air out. Hm methinks it has to be a no to allow beer, wine, chocolate and ice cream.
It is impossible to do sit ups and blog – fact.

  • oh, dear r, didn’t you realise the blogosphere’s all about bouncing ideas around? you should have realised that long ago – this comes with linkage. there’s nothing wrong with sharing interesting trends.

  • haha, i don’t think i’d have the guts to wear that…

but on the other hands, lots of bloggers are doing that Erin Wasson X RVCA thing right now…

exposed bras, monster shoes, exposed zippers and the like.

  • sigh, i’m not sure i can pull that off. haha. and rumi is so slim!?

  • Just no….because a) I’m a cake eating fattie and b) just no….

  • Hell yeah if i had the body! No good showing my fatschlob.

  • Oh my god !!!

    the 90’s ??? brrrrrr

  • Hello! :)

yu shan: Yeaps, that look is really hot now. But I don’t think I have quite the attitude to carry it off!

Nicole: YES, Rumi is indeed insanely slim – look at her tinsy waist!

Susie: I’m a cake-eating fattie too. On top of that, I’m a beer-guzzling flabbie too :( And your ‘just no’ almost made me laugh out loud! :D

Melly: I have fatschlob too! :D

Cilou: If you do the Math, the ’90s has technically been history for eight years now. If its early ’90s, it’ll be more than 15 years :) Maybe its enough for a come-back? But I don’t know if we’re ready for it!

  • lol Actually, I wore this clothes when i was 17-22 because i grew (grow ? excuse my english, i’m french lol) in the 90’s…

  • I always wanted to see a Laura Whitcomb Adidas dress like the one Madonna wore pop up in a vintage store but never got lucky
